UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) is the United Nations’ organization for education, science, culture, and communication. The UNESCO, which is a cross-national organization and has its registered office in Paris, consists of 191 member states.

The main aim of the UNESCO is to contribute to the preservation of peace and security by supporting international cooperation in

The Federal Republic of Germany became a UNESCO member state on 11 June, 1951.

More than 7500 schools worldwide work together in the global school network of the UNESCO project schools. Approximately 170 of them are in Germany. They all live the concepts of international communication, sustainability, and intercultural learning.

Their main focuses are

  • living human rights
  • protecting the environment
  • appreciating other cultures and accomplishing a fair balance between rich and poor
  • preserving our World Heritage

The UNESCO is also responsible for the implementation of the World Decade (2005-2014) “Education for sustainable development” (BNE). The aim is to engrave the thought of sustainable development into every branch of the education system.
