The UNESCO year topic in the school year 2008/2009 is “World Heritage: One World – One Culture – One World Culture“

„“Culture counts“. This message is the leitmotif of the UNESCO program.

And none of the UNESCO programs attracts more public attention than the World Heritage. Protection and preservation of the cultural heritage, preservation and promotion of the cultural diversity, and the communication between cultures are the main tasks of this program. According to the World Heritage Convention the cultural heritage is not the property of the country or state in which it is located, it is rather the property of all mankind. Losing one of these precious goods would be an irreplaceable loss for everybody.

The UNESCO World Heritage Sites are places of cultural encounters and international understanding. Mr. Hirche, president of the German UNESCO commission, describes the World Heritage Sites as UNESCO ambassadors.

In Hildesheim, the home of two World Heritage Sites, the Cathedral of Hildesheim (Hildesheimer Dom) with its art treasures, and the St. Michael’s Church (Michaeliskirche), which will celebrate its 1000th birthday next year, the motivation to get intensively involved with this topic was quite strong. This was also the case in the Robert-Bosch-Comprehensive School UNESCO Project School (ups) .

At the collective conference on June 11, 2008 the UNESCO group had asked all teachers to integrate interdisciplinary World Heritage contents and activities in their curriculum of the coming school year – until the UNESCO Project Day on May 20, 2009. During the team meetings on June 3 and 4, 2008 the results were embedded in the plans for the coming year and marked turquoise. It was the pedagogic decision of the team leaders of the different classes, which of the contents and activities were included in the year plan.

The frame topic was supposed to orient itself on the 1000th birthday of the St. Michael’s Church (Michaeliskirche) and on the numerous accompanying events in the city and the district.

On May 20, 2009 an interesting and impressive variety of successful results of lessons was presented in the school. This was another example for the cooperation of the different classes. The exhibitions and the activities were the living proof for the motivating commitment of the school community, as the school has learned to appreciate the cultural heritage of our ancestors by approaching the topic in a variety of ways.

The UNESCO group has understood one thing during the reflection of the activities and the presentations: respecting the World Heritage creates the positive awareness of campaigning for its protection and preservation in the future.

Activities of the Project Day on May 20, 2009:

  • Nonstop film documentation about World Heritage Sites
